Pediatric Vision and Hearing Screening

Pediatric Vision Screening is a preventative eye exam for young children. On average, almost every fifth child has an undetected vision disorder at the age of four. This high prevalence of vision disorders is not surprising as symptoms are not as obvious as other diseases. If vision disorders are not detected and treated within the first years of life, they could lead to a permanent vision defect (eg: lazy eye). Neither glasses nor any other vision aid can compensate for a lazy eye, also called amblyopia.

Affected children do not notice their vision disorder, because they are used to seeing the world with their eyes and have no comparison possibilities. Early childhood screening detects the undetected and is recommended by all pediatricians.

Ametropia, strabismus, and in rare cases media opacities are the most frequently occurring vision disorders during childhood.

Identification of hearing loss through neonatal hearing screening, monitoring of developmental milestones, auditory skills, parental concerns, middle-ear status as well as objective hearing screening of all infants and children at critical developmental stages can prevent or reduce many of the adverse consequences that impaired or hearing loss can bring about such as, lifelong deficits in speech and language acquisition, poor academic performance, personal-social maladjustments, and emotional difficulties.

Hearing loss, in varying degrees, affects 2-3 in every 1000 children under the age of 18. Fortunately, there are very few hearing losses that cannot be helped with modern technology. The most effective treatment is achieved through early intervention. Early diagnosis, early fitting of hearing aids, and an early start on special education programs can help maximize a child's hearing. This will give your child the best chances for successful speech and language development.
