What's to Know About HPV?

What is HPV?

HPV is the name for a group of viruses that affect your skin and the moist membranes lining your body. These highly contagious viruses live dormant in males and females and are most commonly spread during sexual intercourse.

Currently, there are over 200 types found, of which about 40 types will infect the reproductive tract and can cause cervical cancer and precancerous lesions.

HPV is the most common virus to infect the genital tract. A study based on the US population estimates that more than 90% and 80%, respectively, of sexually active men and women will be infected with at least one type of HPV at some point in their lives.

Persistent Infection due to HPV has been Identified as the cause of Cervical Cancer

Almost all instances of cervical cancer (99%) are related to HPV. This makes cervical cancer to be the only tumor to have a clear cause

When infected by HPV, your immune system can fight off many types of HPV without any symptoms occurring, but certain HPV strains with persistent infections can lead to cervical cancer.

Discovery of the Relationship Between HPV and Cervical Cancer was made by Harald zur Hausen
