Cysts】 A Common Condition, But How Do You Treat Them?

Being a woman is hard; I have been on the receiving end of many issues lately. Women grow humans, give birth to them, deal with monthly periods and this is the just the tip of the iceberg! Another recent issue coming to my attention is, ovarian cysts; this apparently is common condition that could happen to any woman.  In many cases, cysts are not painful and won’t cause any problems.  However, what if it starts hurting? How would you know it’s a cyst causing the pain? And what are your treatment options for an ovarian cyst?

Ovaries are located on both sides of the uterus and produce eggs and hormones.  Sometimes a cyst will develop on the ovaries.   Follicle Cyst and Corpus Luteum Cyst are the two most common types. Other cysts include dermoid cyst,(containing hair, fat and other tissues), cystademonas (non cancerous growth) and endometriomas.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition when the ovaries have a large number of cysts causing the ovaries to enlargen. If untreated, this could cause infertility.

Ovarian Cyst Symptoms

(note that these symptoms are very similar to period pains)

+ Bloating

Painful bowel movements

Pelvic pain

Pain in the lower back

Breast tenderness

Nausea

More serious symptoms that can be caused by a ruptured cyst needing immediate medical attention are:

Severe pelvic pain

Fever

Dizziness

Rapid breathing

Doctors can check if you have a cyst during a pelvic examination and ultrasound to confirm there is a cyst. In the majority of cases, cysts will disappear by themselves and just require monitoring. Treatment to shrink or lessen cysts may be birth control, Laparoscopy or a Laparotomy.
